The professors are true professionals and many teach only part-time. For the adult, working student, UMUC is an excellent place to further ones educaitonal goals. In terms of the quality of the teachers, materials, and student interaction, I would definitely recommend this school to my colleagues. If you can get a more reputable degree somewhere and spend a little more money than I would go that route. This is definately a college town, "College Park", MD. What I love about my school is that there is a niche for everyone. Most of the online professors that I had were incredibly encouraging and supportive. In state-run institutions like UMUC if you have to depend in any way on any 'government' process to pursue your degree you are treated like a cash cow - they lure you in but they string you out and suck the motoney while putting you into debt, and the first thing you have to learn is that you are going to Have To Be a good lawyer on your own behalf if you are going to get anything out of it - and that means that if you get in and either survive under GI Bills, Pell Grants, Loans, or Scholarships being handled by the universities or 'loan guarantors' or banks in any way then you deserve your degree, but if you figure out the scam before you do, then they were never qualified to give you and degrees and you were already considered the Threat to that business Before you even got in. The Accounting program with UMUC was one of the most difficult schools in which I participated. Founded in 1856, UMD is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland. The reputation that UMD has built truly carries a long way; I am confident that when I apply for a professional career later in life that the employer will have heard great things about UMD and be impressed. As I live in a small town, I was looking for a large Univeristy with more diverse professors and students to learn from. The other issue I have, which represents much of my dissatifaction with the program, is that the overall quality of many of the enrolled students can be low. Additionally, I would say that whoever stated that this is a "paper mill" program, surely is not in the program, nor has ever been in the program. I think it was mainly because I wasn't use to the online format and really didn't understand the commitment and personal responsibility that must be taken when you take courses online. Without a doubt, I have to work harder at UMUC than I did in a on-site classroom where I could just show up, sit through a lecture, and do a paper or two here and there. That was a pretty big controversy last year, when they kicked the rising seniors off campus. I love that it is a big school and there are a lot of opportunities to get involved with so many different things. I have significantly improved my knowledge and the information learned is actually helping my career. Students should consult with a representative from the school they select to learn more about career opportunities in that field. I appreciate having a college campus to call my home, and I certainly prefer it over a college situated in a city, where it runs the risk of lacking any semblance of a campus environment. But I had to make far too many calls, forward far too many emails, just to confirm some pretty basic things -- testing credits, program requirements, degree progress. Even in a 200 person lecture hall, where your teacher doesn't know you from the guy next to you, the students are friendly and the teachers and TAs are absolutely willing to make time to help you understand any and every concept if you are willing to put in the time and effort to learn and reach out to them.
